3 Things to Know About Glamping

In only the last handful of years, dome glamping has burst onto the New Brunswick recreational scene – and taken it by storm.

What’s not to love? The combination of gorgeous geodesic domes and rustic, outdoor adventures brings happy glampers back year over year.

Glamping in New Brunswick just hits a little different. Our gorgeous lakes and beautiful forests have attracted travelers for years!

Whether you’re from another province looking to visit a beautiful NB glampsite or a lifelong resident looking for a little something different, we’ve got the solution for you.

1. The Glamping Origin Story

Glamping, the word itself, is a portmanteau of the words ‘glamorous’ and ‘camping’.

Glampsites differentiate themselves from glampsites by incorporating more than, well, the bare minimum for survival – and even then, that’s negligible!

Glampers get the fun and adventure of water sports, ATV trails, hiking, chasing waterfalls, and more, while still enjoying all of the comforts of a hotel or resort location.

Glamping resorts will often include amenities like full hot showers, luxurious bedding, beautiful accommodations like geodesic domes, full-service cabins, or cottages, hot tubs, private patios, wi-fi, and so much more.

Glamping is thought to have originated in the United Kingdom, around 2005. This is hard to confirm, as the concept of glamorous camping has been around for centuries.

Fun fact: A notable medieval example of ‘glamping’ is the Field of the Cloth of Gold, a diplomatic meeting between good old Henry VIII of England and Francis I of France. Close to 3,000 tents were put up, and red wine flowed freely.

2. What Is A Geodesic Dome?

We’ve mentioned that once or twice – so what is it? Oversimplified, a geodesic dome is a spherical structure made of struts that follow geodesic patterns, usually triangles.

The concept of a geodesic dome has been around since the early 1900s, and the structures can easily withstand significant weather events like hurricanes, storms, and even earthquakes. It’s fairly science-y, but this is primarily due to the even weight distribution of the domes.
